The Elegant Voyeur – Parkland-Coral Springs Life
Tucked away on a hidden side street in the heart of Parkland sits the dramatic Tudor style home of Vicki and Terry Shore. You gotta see this house to believe it. Looks like it could easily be perched on top of a snow-capped mountain in North Carolina or Colorado. Married for 24 years, the Shores share a passion for designing and building magnificent, yet warm and charming houses. These long-time Parkland/Coral Springs residents and owners of South Shore Plumbing rarely stay in a house more than three years before starting from scratch all over again. Hey, some people like collecting stamps. They have built multiple homes in Eagle Trace, Whispering Woods, Tall Pines and even spent a brief time in Boca Raton while their daughter Brooke attended St. Andrews School. But when Brooke left for college, they realized how much they missed the rural ambiance of Parkland and began designing their latest masterpiece. But one thing has remained consistent, with each house they constructed over the last 19 years, P&H Interiors has been there every step of the way helping make each stately house become a warm, elegant and unique home. Susan Connor, CEO of P&H Interiors, really enjoys working closely with the Shores. “It’s an honor designing homes for Vicki, Terry and their family. We strive to create impressive architectural features and provide unexpected details for the Shores and the interesting homes they build,” said Susan. Both Vicki and Susan are emphatic that the end results are due to the group efforts of the Shores and the whole P&H design team.
At first sight of this spectacular home you do feel as if you left Florida and traveled to a mountain community. Brick and stone facing with the gabled roofline, expansive driveway and perfectly manicured landscaping make an impressive first impression. Beyond the majestic arched wood and glass door entry, the random pattern, unfinished stone floors are the perfect foundation on which to layer the unique design details. The grand living room sets the tone for the entire home. A variety of fine fabrics mix color and texture adding a warm elegance to this beautiful room. Solid wood timbers were hand formed into trusses accentuating the soaring vaulted ceilings. The focal point of this stately room though is the impressive stone fireplace and wood carved mantle, which is the perfect display for one of the many commissioned portraits of their children and family found throughout the home. When the Shores transition from one home to another they usually sell the former home furnished, bringing a new element of style into the current home, but there are certain pieces that have history and meaning that follow. “There are some things I call our ‘family treasures’, like my baby grand piano, which we move from house to house,“ Vicki explained. The beautiful heirloom piano is perfectly complemented by the rich stained woods of the cocktail and occasional tables. The exquisite Persian rug anchors the room blending beautifully with the upholstery on the plush sofa and wing chairs. The dining room continues the rustic charm adding in some old world elements with a brick wall feature and a faux painted dome ceiling. The circular wood dining table is perfect for the flow of this wonderful room. “This room is a perfect example of the layers of detail P&H contributes,” said Vicki. “They will add feature upon feature until we have the perfect ambiance and character for each room.”
The Shores love to entertain and a warm and welcoming yet functional kitchen was a must. An enormous, wood topped center island invites you to pull up a stool and enjoy a snack. The island also houses convenient features such as paneled refrigerator and dishwasher drawers. A brick red reproduction stove, vintage style hearth and cast iron farmhouse sink add to the old world charm. A surprise element is found under the stairs. A weathered Dutch door opens to a whimsical butler’s pantry complete with vintage wallpaper, skirted farmhouse sink, a rooster chandelier and a baker’s rack filled with food items. “We call this the general store of the house,“ joked Vicki.
Even though both of the Shore’s children are away in school, Brooke is a junior at Elon University in North Carolina and Brandon, a graduate of Elon, is in law school at University of Miami, their home is still family friendly. Double sided base cabinets emulate the look of furniture and separate the kitchen from the family room. Designed for conversation, the seating group is a luxurious mix of fabrics that carries through to the fabulous window dressings too. Distressed wood beams encompass the entire family room and kitchen area ceiling adding to the rustic charm. The stone floors transition to Hickory wood as it leads you to what the Shores call “The men’s wing” of the home. Aside from Brandon’s warm yet masculine room showcasing some of his many football trophies and memorabilia, Terry has a spectacular home office with wall-to-wall wood paneling, custom wood built-ins and pressed tin ceiling tiles. A state of the art home theater integrates design and luxury and is a favorite of the guys for watching sports.
The second floor features two charming guest bedrooms with private baths. Brooke’s room is incredible. No two walls are alike using complementing wallpapers and a unique upholstered wall doubling as a French memo board to hold photos and mementos. As a former dancer, Brooke’s favorite dance costumes and first point shoes also adorn the room. One very special feature of the home is the trophy case on the landing exhibiting the kids’ awards, trophies, photos and other memorabilia. “This is what it’s all really about,” Vicki said looking at the wood and glass encasement. “It’s not about the house but rather the family inside.”
The master suite is romantic and regal with a four-post bed, rosette carpeting, a wood burning fireplace and separate sitting area. Once again, the fine fabrics mix texture and tone to add warmth and charm. The master bath resembles a parlor room of a historic home rather than a modern day master bathroom. Luxurious silk swags with tiebacks separate the vanities from the rest of the bathroom. Ruched, gold silk fabric creates a beyond ordinary ceiling and a beautiful settee style sofa adds a finishing touch. Of course as owners of a large plumbing company, all the fixtures in the bathrooms are exquisite. A signature item present in all of the Shores’ homes is a urinal in one bathroom. Now that’s unique! As if the interior of the home wasn’t enough, the patio and pool area also creates an incredible living area winning design awards for outdoor living spaces. A lagoon style pool with rock waterfalls is soothing. The relaxed country setting from inside is carried through to the outdoor kitchen, dining and lounging areas. The rock and brick face wall houses another wood burning fireplace as well as a hidden plasma television. Splashes of color are added with bold red decorative accents while working gas lanterns add that old world charm.
With such a spectacular home it’s hard to imagine starting all over again. “Right now we have no plans to move but we do get a lot of joy from the process of building and designing,” Vicki said. “We love having everything come together and feel like a home.” Susan and her wonderful designers at P&H Interiors agree. Extraordinary design is achieved by drawing inspiration from the family and creating a home to suit their needs. “The casual rustic charm reflects the comfortable and charming nature of the Shore family,” said Susan. Like Vicki said, “the family inside is really what it’s all about.” Thanks for sharing your beautiful home and family with Parkland Life readers.
